I’ve long believed that a vital element of successful marketing is forming connections, nurturing relationships and – put simply – being as helpful as possible!
When trying to promote your organisation, sometimes being that person who can help meet last-minute media requests makes all the difference. Or being that individual who prioritises responding to emails promptly, even if it’s just to say that you can’t assist on that occasion. It all helps you to be remembered and recontacted time after time.
When heading into the world of freelance communications and copywriting, I promised myself I would aim to do the same again. So, even if I can’t help someone at that particular time, I am more than happy to give suggestions for alternatives or offer advice.
Examples of this include offering occasional work free of charge to community groups or charitable initiatives. I know that this helps to make a big difference in what they do. Or I am happy to recommend from my wider network if I am unable to help or if the particular enquiry doesn’t match my skill set. I often pass on media call-outs when they match particular organisations or individuals.
I wanted to work for myself because I enjoy choosing to support organisations and individuals that aim to make a difference in the world. So, if I can pay it forward a little bit too, then all the better for everyone. And, hopefully, it pays off for me too by building those connections and relationships for the future.
We all know that it’s ‘nice to be nice!’ and the organisations that make decisions based upon longer-term goals – whether it’s for the environment, communities or individuals around us – are the businesses that will be more sustainable in the future too.
I’ve recently reached my one-year anniversary since I went freelance. I have been delighted by the number of people that I’ve worked with in the past who’ve been back in touch to work with me again, sometimes from several roles ago. It’s great to reignite those relationships, share knowledge, and continue to work together.
If anyone would like to get in touch with me about the services they offer then please do. Just as an example, I don’t offer photography, social media, or Google Adwords services – so I am always looking to build connections with small local businesses. If you’re another freelancer working in Peterborough/Stamford/Rutland, then get in touch! I’m always keen to support other small businesses in the region.
